The full Open Water Diver course (Level 1) consists of three components: Knowledge, confined water skills and open water diving.
In total, there are 6 sections in the Open Water Diver manual and these are delivered as digital learning which can be studied either online using a web browser or offline using the SSI App. Each section has a knowledge review consisting of 10 multi-
Confined water training is conducted in our heated pool and this is where you will learn and develop your open water diving skills. The skills are divided into 6 sections and the emphasis is on comfort through repetition – each skill is introduced and practiced repeatedly to ensure you become totally familiar with executing it.
The open water qualifying dives are your opportunity to show your instructor that you are ready to become an Open Water Diver. There are 4 dives to complete and this will qualify you to dive to 18 metres with a buddy qualified to the same level or above. Junior divers under the age of 12 have a 12 metre depth limit and must dive with a professional or a parent/guardian who is a qualified diver.
After the qualifying dives have been completed (over a minimum of 2 days) we offer the opportunity to complete an additional 2 dives, either as leisure dives or as additional training dives. An example would be to complete the Dry Suit Diver course which would count towards your Level 2 training and enable you to hire a dry suit for your future diving.
For people who do not have the time available to complete the full Open Water Diver course or who want to dive without taking full responsibility for dive planning we can offer the Scuba Diver qualification. This is an intermediate certification allowing you to dive to 12 metres under professional supervision. To qualify as a Scuba Diver you will complete the first 3 sections of theory, the first 3 sections in the pool and the first 2 open water dives.
You can upgrade from Scuba Diver to Open Water Diver at a later date by completing the remaining sections of the course.
The Referral Diver qualification can be issued once all 6 knowledge and confined water sections have been successfully completed. As a Referral Diver you will be qualified to dive in a pool with a buddy at the same level or above. This allows you to gain additional practice and confidence before you move to open water for your qualifying dives. You will also have the option of completing the open water dives as a referral at a centre overseas.
If you complete the course as a referral at an SSI centre then they can issue your certification. If you complete it with a centre which does not offer SSI training such as a PADI centre then they will refer you back to ourselves for certification. Whichever centre issues your certification will charge a fee for registration.
